Follow-Up Email Cheat Sheet

Follow up template for “B list” contacts. This is someone who may become valuable contacts in the future but not right away:

Jim,

My name is Mia Jackson, and I’m the consultant who met you the other day over at the chamber. I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed our conversation. It sounds like you’re doing well and staying busy!

Anyway, it was good talking to you, and if I can assist you in any way, please let me know.

Best Regards,

Mia

Follow up Template for “A list” contacts. This is someone who might become a new client or referral partner right now:

Luke,

My name is Jack Wyatt, and I’m the consultant who met you the other day at the chamber event. I just wanted to say I really enjoyed our conversation and was hoping I could learn a little bit more about what you do.That way, if I run into someone who could use your services, I can point them in your direction.

I’m thinking we can get together next Tuesday at 8:30 am over at Starbucks. How does that sound?

Again, great talking to you, and if I can help your business in any way, please let me know.

Best Regards,

Jack

After you’ve met with the person send them an email or handwritten note. I prefer hand written notes. To me, there’s nothing more personal.

Dear Luke,

Thanks for a wonderful meeting yesterday. I’m glad we got a chance to connect, collaborate, and see how we can work together. It was also nice to find out all the things we have in common.

Looking forward to the next time!

P.S. I have something I’d like to share with you. Call me at 404-590-7956 when you can.

Sincerely,

Jack

If you ask them to call you, make sure you have something of value to offer them. This may be a connection to another person or organization, or maybe something they said sparked another question or idea you’d like to discuss. Also, when you speak with them, bring up something that they are interested in. It shows you were truly listening and picked up on their personal affairs.

If you emailed them instead of sending a note, send them something of value. This could be a relevant link to help them or just a fun link relating to their recreational interests.
